Hints and Tips

Hints and Tips

Boutique fabric stores often have materials from all over the globe. We love the collection at Duckcloth in Melbourne - www.duckcloth.com.au

How to...

1

Begin by drawing the shapes you think you’ll need straight onto the paper. Cut out the pattern pieces and assemble using sticky tape. Use a little wadding to fill out the shape, as this will show you whether any adjustments or extra pieces are needed. Once you’re satisfied with your model, label the pattern pieces, pin them to the fabric and cut out the shapes.

2

Starting with the body, pin the front and back pieces together, right sides facing inwards, and sew a seam, leaving a 5cm gap for stuffing. Do the same for the head and any limbs and other features. Turn the pieces right side out and stuff with the wadding (or the filling from an old pillow). Use the stuffing tool or chopstick to push the stuffing right to the end and into any crevices.

3

Use hand stitching to close the openings on the limbs and head. Pin the limbs onto the body and then hand stitch in place. Blanket stitch is a good way to attach limbs securely and looks very sweet. Pin any other features or appendages in place, including buttons for eyes, and stitch securely.

4

Before you close the opening on the body, massage the piece to distribute stuffing evenly; ensure limbs are supported and add more stuffing if required.

5

Finish the toy by stitching the head securely to the body. It’s a good idea to stitch around the neck twice to prevent the head from wobbling.

I like the chicken in the background on the thumbnail.
erm... if you've got the skills to just 'draw the shapes you think you'll need' and voila, make a bunny, then do you really need this article? Would it be so hard to provide a simple pattern (say as a downloadable PDF) of these elusive/magical bunny shapes? Could we recommend some books perhaps, which can provide detail?

Nice idea... but there's a real lack of follow through.
Yes could you please add a pattern to download for making the bunny and also the bird that was in the magazine? Thank you
Yes a pattern would be great. Looks great but even a rough drawing would help to start.
