World Sight Day: October 9th and throughout the month

Throughout the month optometrists will be supporting global blindness prevention by donating one day’s eye exam fees and inviting their staff and patients to make a donation as well. As little as $5 can provide the pair of glasses and eye test needed to restore someone’s sight.

Optometry Giving Sight’s Ambassador, cricketer and former optometrist, Geoff Lawson, stresses that this year’s ‘Vision for Life’ theme, raising awareness of vision and the aging population, is particularly important for women because deterioration of vision is inevitable – and women live longer.

Women in every region of the world and of all ages run a greater risk of becoming visually impaired than men, according to the World Health Organisation.

This is because women have a longer life expectancy than men and sight inevitably deteriorates with age. Women in developing countries, where 90% of the world’s vision-impaired lives, are even more at risk because they often lack access to essential health services.

Between the age of 40 and 50, almost everyone will develop presbyopia – a condition where vision becomes difficult at a normal reading distance - making regular eye checks essential for an active and productive lifestyle.
