Gordana Flatz, 40
Prior to her makeover, Gordana was committed to growing her hair. “I went from really long to really short hair; it has taken me three years to get to this length,” she said. “I think when women get to their forties they do change. You still want to look young and funky – and I think long hair is more youthful.”
But celebrity stylist Renya Xydis, who counts Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett as her clients, wielded the scissors with skill to reduce the length of Gordana’s hair without giving her a heart attack. Gordana loved the result: “I looked in the mirror and thought I looked great,” she says.
“This is more than a trim,” explains Renya. “A trim is usually one centimetre and this is four or five. We layered it; it’s going to lift the sides so it won’t look so lank. It will help with body at the crown because we layered it through the back as well, so she’ll get root lift through the top and softness around the cheekbones with the layering at the sides and the ends.

“If she’d let me, I would have cut a beautiful soft fringe, but she wasn’t up for that, so I did something different by parting it in the middle. This created a soft shadow around the face and allowed her cheekbones to come out.
“Most people stick with what they know best, but simple things such as a new hairstyle can make you feel as though you’ve had a life change.” Her new cut breaks preconceived ideas of mumsy, old-fashioned-looking hair, and Gordana loved how thick and healthy it felt. “I felt a lot prettier,” she said.
Styling notes
Renya wanted to add bounce and root lift to Gordana’s hair. She used Wella SP Perfect Hair, $28, a light leave-in foam to protect Gordana’s hair during heat styling, followed by ghd Fat Hair lotion, $35. Renya applied Wella High Hair Ocean Spritz, $22.50, on the roots for added lift. She blow-dried the hair straight and wrapped it around large rollers until Gordana’s hair cooled to room temperature. After the rollers came out, she finished with Sebastian Originals Shaper Plus Hairspray, $28.50.
